How To Sew Your Own Clothes

1. Get a measuring tape and take your measurements. The most important measurements to take are your bust, waist and hips. To take your bust measurement you need to wrap the tape measure around the fullest part of your boobs. To measure your waist the tape measure should be around the smallest part of your waist. Finally your hip measurement is taken around the fullest part of your hips. This is important to know what pattern size you are.

2. Go to the fabric store or look online and pick out your Sewing patterns. Sewing Patterns are blueprints on how to cut out your Fabric to make a certain clothing design. If you are just learning to Sew than you will need to pick out the simplest patterns that you can find. I would recommend starting with an elastic waist A-Line Skirt Pattern. That is usually the easiest piece of clothing to Sew.

3. Pick your pattern according to your body type. If you have a Full Bust than it will be easiest to pick alter a Pattern that has seams in the front. Such as princess seams. You can also use darts to fit a piece of clothing.

4. Determine your Pattern size according to your measurements. The sizes are usually located on the back of the envelope or inside the Pattern flap. It may be a little difficult to decide what size you are because you might be between sizes. I am. The best thing to do is take your largest measurement and determine your size by that. It is a lot easier to take a garment in than it is to take it out and you want to be able to fit your creation perfectly. You can always make adjustments.

7. I know you are anxious to take everything home cut out your fabric and make yourself a fancy new dress. But hold your horses. You need to look inside the envelope and make any adjustments to the pattern that need to be made. As I mentioned you may need to make some alterations to the pattern. 9. After you have made all the adjustments to the pattern than you will want to lay out the fabric on a flat surface. Make sure that there are no folds in the fabric and that it is completely flat.

10. Cut out the pattern pieces as you have located and altered them.

11. Make sure your Sewing machine is plugged in. and the foot pedal is in a location comfortable for you.

12. Follow the Sewing Pattern instructions very carefully, step by step. Until you are about midway through.

13. Try on your Garment to check the fit.

14. Make any additional alterations.

15. Repeat step 13, and if needed step 14.

16. Finish garment according to the pattern instructions.
